Even though Brian Flores led the Miami Dolphins to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in almost two decades, the franchise fired him last month. This week Flores sued the NFL and three of its teams, including the Dolphins, alleging racial discrimination.
Naturally, this has lead to a lot of discussions on the overall treatment of minority coaches in the NFL. Something that a lot have known for along time.
After the lawsuit, many spring football fans had wondered if we may see Flores join the XFL as a coach for its 2023 return. Our opinion was that it seems like a stretch, but don’t tell that to the executives at the XFL.
Doug Whaley, XFL SVP Player Personnel, joined TMZ to discuss the Flores situation and he ended with a very interesting line.
Doug also tells us he thinks Flores should get another shot at a head coaching gig in the NFL … though, after the lawsuit’s filing, he’s now uncertain that will happen.
If Whaley can’t find work for The Shield moving forward … Doug — who’s now an exec for the rebooted XFL — tells us he just might have a spot for Flores in his league.
Does this mean anything, not really. At least for now. As the NFL lawsuit moves forward, we may get to the point where Flores may want to stay active in coaching, and the XFL may be his best alternative at the moment.
The USFL just finalized all eight of their head coaches, and outside of the CFL; there isn’t many other options.
We’re not going to hold our breath on this one, but if it does come to fruition we’d love to see it.
