Los Angeles Wildcats QB Josh Johnson Works Out With 49ers

Just earlier today we reported that former Los Angeles Wildcats offensive tackle Kahlil McKenzie had singed with the Cincinnati Bengals. As expected, as the 2020 NFL season gets closer, the more former XFL players we’re seeing get try outs and signed.

When the XFL was forced to suspend its season just five games in due to the Covid-19 pandemic a lot of fans had wondered why we hadn’t seen Josh Johnson sign with either the CFL or the NFL. Today, it seems like we may be closer to that announcement.

The former Los Angeles Wildcats quarterback was one of five that worked out with the San Francisco 49ers earlier today.

Johnson played college football at San Diego and was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Considered a journeyman quarterback, Johnson has been a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Francisco 49ers, Sacramento Mountain Lions, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants, Houston Texans, Oakland Raiders, Washington Redskins, Detroit Lions, and the XFL’s Los Angeles Wildcats.

Johnson was allocated to the Los Angeles Wildcats on November 22, 2019, as part of the XFL’s inaugural draft. On November 25, 2019, the Detroit Lions tried to re-sign Johnson but the XFL did not allow him to leave his contract with the Wildcats. Despite the Wildcats finishing 2-3 in the 5 game COVID-19 pandemic shortened season season in 2020, Johnson performed admirably in 4 games (missing week 1 with an injury) by converting 60% of his passes, completing 81 out of 135 attempts for 1,076 yards for 11 touchdowns against only 2 interceptions for a QB rating of 106.3.
