Washington Commanders Sign Former Stallions K Ramiz Ahmed

Folks, we have our first UFL to NFL signing of the offseason. Former Birmingham Stallions kicker Ramiz Ahmed has signed with the Washington Commanders, first reported by Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post.

This move comes in the wake of Brandon McManus being released by Washington last week – on accounts of sexual assault. With an opening at the position, the Commanders have looked to the UFL for a replacement.

Ramiz Ahmed is a spring football veteran. He played with the Pittsburgh Maulers in 2022, which led to his signing with the Green Bay Packers that offseason.

After spending some time as a free agent the last several months, the Birmingham Stallions were in need of a kicker. Chris Blewitt went down with an injury early in the year, and the Stallions signed Ramiz Ahmed as his holdover replacement.

Ahmed came in and immediately made an impact, hitting a game winner in week four against the DC Defenders.

Ramiz Ahmed finished his UFL season with 10 made field goals on 13 attempts. All of his misses were from 40+ yards out. Ramiz was effective on kickoffs, averaging 68.9 yards per kick. He was recently let go by Birmingham, since Blewitt returned from IR.

Now, he’ll get an opportunity to continue his professional career in the NFL, with the Washington Commanders.

Final Thoughts

This is technically the first official UFL to NFL signing. While former San Antonio Brahmas WR Matt Landers had signed with the Cleveland Browns a few weeks ago, he didn’t record any statistics with the team, and was likely picked up due to his stint with Seattle the prior preseason.

On the other hand, while Ahmed did not finish the season with Birmingham, that was never the team’s intention – the goal was always to bring Blewitt back once he got healthy. Ramiz was able to use the UFL to get valuable film, which now leads to his return to the NFL.

Once again, spring football continues to prove how valuable it is to the NFL. With one signing down, we’re expecting dozens more once the UFL Championship is over. For the time being, no UFL players who are currently under contract can sign with NFL teams until after the Championship. Ramiz is an exception, since he was already let go.
