USFL/XFL Merger News Expected to Drop on New Years Eve

USFL/XFL Merger News Expected to Drop on New Year’s Eve

Ever since the USFL and XFL announced their intent to merge many questions have arrised. Well, it looks like the wait may not be much longer. Just now, it was announced that FOX has ‘some big news to share” tomorrow at 12pm ET during their NFL Sunday coverage.

Although the statement doesn’t explicitly mention either league, the social post was shared by the USFL & XFL accounts. The news is also set to drop with 90 days left until the new league kicks off.

At minimum, it’s expected that FOX reveals the new name for the combined league tomorrow. If the rumors are true, tomorrow could be the end of the USFL & XFL, but the beginning of the United Football League (UFL).

If you we’re hoping to learn the teams, the wait may be a bit longer. Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Eric Shanks will make a joint announcement on New Year’s Day around the new league and the specific markets.

It’s expected that we’ll see 8 teams in the merged league, but nothing is official until it comes from the league itself.

Last week, the USFLPA informed players that the four USFL teams to be in the new league were:

Birmingham Stallions
Memphis Showboats
Michigan Panthers
Houston Gamblers

The four XFL teams in the merged league include:

Arlington Renegades
DC Defenders
San Antonio Brahmas
St. Louis Battlehawks

Needless to say, if you’re a fan of spring football, make sure you’re tuned into FOX tomorrow at 12pm ET.

As always, we’ll keep you posted as more information comes out on the merger.
