What a Late February Draft Means For The USFL 2022 Timeline

USFL Playoffs & Championship Game Set to be Played in Canton, OH

The USFL season is approaching fast, and everyday we’re hearing more about the new league.

Earlier this month the USFL held a major media event at Protective Stadium where they named Birmingham, AL the leagues home in 2022. It was also during this event that the league announced that the debut matchup between the Birmingham Stallions and New Jersey Generals would be simulcast on FOX and NBC.

Although we learned a lot about the upcoming season, not much was said about the playoffs.

Today, it looks like we have some answers. Roy S. Johnson of AL.com reports that the USFL playoffs and championship game will not be played in Birmingham, AL.

This stems to a scheduling conflict with the 2022 World Games which is also set for Birmingham. Instead the USFL is going this historic route and will be hosting their playoffs and championship in Canton, Ohio. Canton is also home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the widely-known as the birthplace of professional football.

The USFL playoffs and championship are set to be played at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, which is located next to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and holds up to 20,000 people.

The playoffs will begin on June 25 with the top two teams from the North Division and the South Division going head to head for a spot in the championship, which is scheduled for July 3.

Johnson states that the change came about because the opening ceremonies of the World Games is slated to begin on July 7 at Protective Stadium. With only four days between the USFL Championship and the World Games, there just wasn’t enough time to allow the latter to prepare.

It sounds like this has been in the works for a while, and both the league and Birmingham city officials were aware of the situation.

Since the report surfaced, the USFL has put out an official press release on the historic event, which you can read here.
