UFL To Feature Friday Night Games In 2025

It’s official: The UFL will have games on Fridays in the 2025 season. Eric Shanks confirmed this news today, introducing IndyCar to the FOX Sports platform.

Spring football has seen a couple of Friday Night games in the past. In the USFL’s 2022 season, the New Jersey Generals and Michigan Panthers played on Friday in week two.

This past XFL season in 2023, the Arlington Renegades and Seattle Sea Dragons faced off on a Friday evening in Arlington.

Deadline Hollywood had originally reported this news last month:

“Also, for the first time in five years, there is no WWE SmackDown on Fridays as the network is replacing the departing wrestling franchise with sports coverage of college football and basketball as well as UFL.”

This will certainly shake up the TV schedule for the UFL in 2025. This year, games were strictly on Saturdays and Sundays. For FOX, at least, Friday Nights will be utilized.

It’ll be intriguing to see how this impacts the overall TV Ratings and viewership for the UFL. The few games featured on Friday in the past haven’t attracted large audiences. However, with the lack on WWE Smackdown on Fridays for FOX, it makes sense to see the organization utilize spring football as something to fill that window. The UFL, in 2024, has seen some of the strongest TV Ratings that spring football has had since the 2020 XFL.

Originally, this move to Fridays felt like a lead-in to potential expansion for the 2025 UFL season. While expansion hasn’t been ruled out, the latest rumors and rumblings indicate that the UFL will look to stick with eight teams for 2025. If this is the case, then we can expect Saturdays and/or Sundays to only feature one game, as opposed to two each as we’ve been accustomed to.

  1. Hey James, I hope you are well. I, too, have expressed how expansion would open a Friday or Monday night option. Even without this I see this as being good as days in the Spring are usually times for family events, etc. If you can get bars to buy in to airing these games, it would truly open up football fans to this league. I feel there was really an increase in the amount of talent in the league this year and I think this will help it be noticed.

  2. The deadline article last month only confirmed the obvious. With West coast teams in the BigTen, CFB was replacing Smackdown in the fall. It only made sense to have CBB in the winter and UFL in the spring do the same.

I never saw this as something to do with expansion. Now if WBD-TNT jumps in in 2026… I could see expansion then.
