The UFL is headed toward a third season with a lot of changes since Mike Repole joined the ownership group. This season we’ve seen a shakeup in teams and locations, as well as a coordinated effort to move into smaller MLS stadiums.
The exception (so far) is the St. Louis Battlehawks. This shouldn’t be a shock to anyone, as the Battlehawks have long been the biggest fanbase in spring football since the XFL kicked off in 2020. The Battlehawks have had the largest crowds in the UFL, by far, but they’ve also had a drop in attendance over the last two seasons.
It looks like the Battlehawks days at The Dome might be numbered. KMOV reports that the UFL “had had conversation with St. Louis City SC about potentially moving… to Energizer Park”.
According to KMOV, Repole has stated that no decision has been made on the move.
Would a Battlehawk game look and feel different if we played in a sold-out soccer stadium? I’m not sure,” Repole said. “But I’m gonna tell you right now I’m going to listen to the fans, I’m going to listen to the experts in the market, I’m going to listen to the local sponsors that we have. I mean, I want to do what’s right for the city.”
Energizer Park has a capacity of approximately 22,000, which should be easy for the Battlehawks to sellout on a consistent basis. This feels like a great move for the franchise. The Dome is showing its age, whereas Energizer park opened in 2022. If Repole can strike a deal, he’ll have another modern MLS stadium hosting one of his teams.
The major challenge with this potential move is the lack of a dome. Especially when you consider that the UFL is looking at moving their season earlier in the year. The Battlehawks have a rabid fanbase, but weather will definitely be a talking point as they discuss all future plans.
