Late July has turned into a wild time for the United Football League (UFL). On top of moving out of Birmingham, the UFL has announced that the Houston Gamblers will be relocated for the 2027 season as well.
The past few years have been rather difficult for the Houston Roughnecks/Gamblers. Once the USFL-XFL merger took place, the Roughnecks saw a severe dropoff in fan attendance from 2024-2025. Losing Wade Phillips and a 7-3 playoff team took a toll, as C.J. Johnson’s “Roughnecks” went 1-9 in 2024.
Between all of those changes, and the three venues across that span (TDECU, Rice, and finally Shell Energy) – the Gamblers and Roughnecks were never truly stable in Houston – despite being in the area for a few seasons.
This past UFL campaign marked some interesting changes. With Mike Repole at the helm, the Roughnecks were re-branded back to the Gamblers. The league moved Houston to Shell Energy Stadium – a venue that, on paper, looked like the perfect fit. It seats 22,000 people, with a similar vibe and atmosphere to Audi Field with the DC Defenders.
Unfortunately, a lack of brand presence in Houston, plus three losing seasons, resulted in an abrupt entry. Mike Repole spoke on the move for the Gamblers today via Press Release:
“Houston played an important role in reestablishing modern spring football, and we’re grateful to the fans, partners, and community who supported the Roughnecks and Gamblers. Houston is a great sports city, and Shell Energy Stadium has been an outstanding partner and venue. The reality is that we did not give this market the consistency it deserved. Between venue changes, team-name changes, and different approaches, we made it difficult to build lasting momentum.”
In 2026, the Gamblers averaged just 5,683 fans per game, the lowest number in the entire league. Even with a Ludacris concert at the home opener in week two, that crowd didn’t even reach 8,000 people in attendance on Easter.
There is no official word yet on where Houston, or Birmingham, will be headed. The UFL will continue to evaluate and receive calls from cities that are interested in hosting a team. Hopefully, this next chapter will be one that results in more positive success stories – like the ones we saw in Columbus and Louisville in 2026.
