Stallions GM Zach Potter Leaves For Sacramento State

Stallions GM Zach Potter Leaves For Sacramento State

The Birmingham Stallions, and the UFL, appear to be suffering a major loss. General Manager Zach Potter is taking a job with Sacramento State, as their GM. This, for all intents and purposes, means that he will no longer be with Birmingham; leaving the Stallions without their magician behind the scenes.

Zach Potter has been in the Stallions organization for the last three seasons. He officially became the team’s General Manager ahead of season two of the USFL, as he and Head Coach Skip Holtz had developed a close working relationship during their inaugural campaign.

Birmingham is, without a doubt, the creme of the crop when it comes to spring football. They’ve won three straight Championships, dominating their way to success year after year.

A big part of their winning record is the amount of talent they’ve possessed. Potter has been the catalyst for those pickups – and has been continually constructing this roster even after their past Championship victory. Zach’s model is effective: Birmingham has consistently targeted players with legitimate NFL experience, which has translated over to the UFL/USFL quite well.

Potter, at 23, is one of the most accomplished young executives in the football scene. With the accomplishments he’s already got on his resume with two USFL Championships and a UFL Championship, it’s no surprise that he received an opportunity like this one. Potter has been responsible for signing big names such as Adrian Martinez, Matt Corral, Taco Charlton, and plenty of others.

For the Stallions, this leaves them with a major hole. Birmingham has been the top organization in spring football for three years, and are primed to run it back with another impressive roster. But, will the new GM produce on the same level that Potter did? That remains to be seen.

On the flip side, it’ll be intriguing to see who Skip Holtz brings in as Zach’s replacement. He could pursue a former spring executive, such as Billy Devaney, Ryan Jones, or Michael Woods – who were all a part of the USFL from 2022-2023. On the other hand, with all of his college connections, odds are Holtz might go in that direction.

In addition, it’s likely that Russ Brandon and Daryl Johnston will help Holtz in selecting his next GM, as they probably have some names lined up from the previous openings in Memphis and Houston this offseason.

While it’s sad to see Zach go, this is just another success story for spring football. Without the platform that the USFL and UFL provided Zach with, this leap to a D1 gig would have been impossible. Spring football isn’t just about giving players opportunities to play, but it’s also an avenue for coaches, executives, and staff members to further their careers.
