DC Defenders Sign LB Chauncey Rivers In UFL Free Agency | Birmingham Stallions Jahmir Johnson

Stallions & Defenders Trade Chauncey Rivers For Jahmir Johnson

The UFL has seen its first Training Camp trade. The DC Defenders sent LB Chauncey Rivers to the Birmingham Stallions for OT Jahmir Johnson, sources confirm to Pro Football Newsroom.

This is a rather intriguing move for both teams, as cutdown day is just two days away. The Birmingham Stallions have outstanding depth on their offensive line, while DC’s linebacker room was quite deep. Generally speaking, this is a fair trade for both sides.

Chauncey Rivers To Birmingham

Chauncey Rivers was just signed by the DC Defenders at the end of February. Rivers was made popular during his time on “Last Chance U”, and eventually landed in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens.

After being released from their practice squad, Rivers was picked up by the Green Bay Packers, and saw action in a few games during the 2021 season. An injury ended that season short. With the XFL’s Roughnecks in 2023, Chauncey totaled 16 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

For Birmingham, their linebacker core is already very strong. It’s highlighted by Kyahva Tezino, DeMarquis Gates, Travin Howard, and Chris Orr – while also featuring the likes of Elijah Sullivan, Damon Lloyd, and Scooby Wright III.

For the Stallions to pick up another linebacker could mean a couple of things. One, the team simply wants to give another athlete a chance to prove themselves. However, there is also a chance that Birmingham has moved on from certain players. Cutdown day is on March 10th, but we’ve seen franchises waiving players for the past week. Birmingham has yet to do so themselves.

While Jahmir Johnson was a starter for Birmingham through chunks of the 2023 season, their O-line is one of the best in the league. At tackle, they already feature Christian DiLauro, Darius Harper, and Larnel Coleman – just to name a few. GM Zach Potter has consistently acquired NFL-caliber talent, and this latest addition is another example of just that.

Jahmir Ross-Johnson To DC

The DC Defenders have a loaded roster with quality edge rushers and linebackers, so the loss of Chauncey Rivers isn’t detrimental by any means.

Jahmir Johnson is a talented tackle who proved his worth to Birmingham, starting in five of eight regular season games played. Johnson was a key piece to a team that ultimately took home the USFL Championship trophy.

During his senior season after transferring to Texas A&M, Jahmir earned Offensive Top Newcomer Awards after starting in all 11 games.

At tackle, the Defenders currently feature only two players who were with the team in 2023: D’Marcus Hayes, and Tommy Champion. The rest are all new additions during the offseason, and some came through the Dispersal draft.

In addition, starting OT Kyle Murphy had been placed on the injured reserve list. Now, General Manager Von Hutchins makes another solid move to strengthen a position of need with Training Camp fully underway.

Final Thoughts

Overall, this trade seems to be a win-win for both teams. Truthfully, Jahmir Johnson probably has a better chance at making the regular season roster due to the injuries/scenery changes in DC. That said, Rivers is an extremely talented linebacker who is deserving of a roster spot in the UFL as well.

March 10th will mark one of the largest cuts we’ve ever seen in spring football. Every team has to cut from 75 players down to 58. Evidently, plenty of potential starters will be free agents once this officially goes down.
