St. Louis Battlehawks Sign K Andrew Mevis, Lose Max Borghi

The St. Louis Battlehawks added another piece on Friday, but also got news that they’d be losing a star. Kicker Andrew Mevis has signed to the team, who will compete with Andre Szmyt in training camp.

K Andrew Mevis

Andrew Mevis will look to kickstart his professional career in the UFL, with the St. Louis Battlehawks. He began his college days at Fordham, finishing with a 27-38 stat-line throughout three seasons.

In 2021, he transferred to Iowa State. In his lone year there, Andrew had a solid stint, connecting on 20 of his 23 field goal attempts. His three misses were between 40-49 yards, as he was 2-2 from 50+ yards out.

Mevis has had a couple of opportunities, most notably with the Jacksonville Jaguars where he struggled in camp. It’ll be interesting to watch the battle between Szmyt and Mevis unfold in training camp, as neither has a plethora of NFL experience – and zero spring football experience, either.

Max Borghi’s Departure

In a brutal piece of news for St. Louis, Sports Illustrated reports that Max Borghi is not going to be playing in the UFL in 2024.

Borghi had his rights claimed by the Battlehawks before the merger went through. Max was one of the top playmakers for Houston in 2023 when healthy, and was a key piece to AJ Smith’s offense with the Roughnecks.

Max finished the XFL season with 310 rushing yards and six touchdowns, while also adding 121 receiving yards to his total tally.

Now, the team only features Mateo Durant and Kevon Latulas. Starting running back Brian Hill has yet to return, so we’ll see if he decides to come back with this latest development in St. Louis.

Final Thoughts

DPP Dave Boller has finally addressed the need at kicker, after opting to not draft anyone in either dispersal draft earlier this month. With the additions of Andre Szmyt and Andrew Mevis, the team will now look to finalize their remaining six open roster spots ahead of training camp.
