San Antonio Brahmas Sign Sam Tecklenburg & Kelechi Anyalebechi

San Antonio Brahmas Re-Sign LB Kelechi Anyalebechi

With the injury to Nate Wieland, the San Antonio Brahmas have re-signed LB Kelechi Anyalebechi, who was just with the team in Training Camp. It’s not surprising to see a familiar face return, and one would expect other UFL organizations to follow suit when dealing with injuries.

Nate Wieland is out for the entire season with a tricep tear. According to Head Coach Wade Phillips, his surgery and recovery time will knock him out for several months. It’s a shame, because Wieland was playing very well during his limited defensive snaps. Additionally, he was a special teams ace.

While he won’t be easy to replace, Kelechi Anyalebechi was, in my opinion, one of the most underrated signings for any UFL team this offseason. Kelechi played the entirety of his collegiate football at Incarnate Word. During his first three years, he started in eight of 25 games.

However, Kelechi earned a starting role from 2021-2022, and was an absolute stud. Anyalebechi proved to be a tackling machine, totaling 244 tackles between those seasons. He also added four interceptions and 10 sacks to his resume with the Cardinals.

His strong campaign led to an NFL opportunity with the Los Angeles Rams. He spent the 2023 NFL preseason with the team, and racked up 10 tackles in three games. After his release, he most recently had a workout with the Carolina Panthers in October.

Anyalebechi came into camp with the Brahmas, but was released during the final set of cutdowns from 58 to 50.

Final Thoughts

Considering Wieland made an impact on special teams, expect Kelechi to be utilized in a similar way. The Brahmas are stacked at the linebacker position, but Anyalebechi could absolutely prove his worth to the team in a variety of ways given his background.

After a 1-0 start, General Manager Marc Lillibridge has to be pleased with how things look so far. He’s completely revamped this roster compared to the 2023 iteration under previous management – in a positive way.

San Antonio will face off against the Memphis Showboats to kick off week two of the UFL. The game kicks off at 12pm ET this Saturday, on ESPN.
