San Antonio Brahmas Sign Aaron Monteiro & Ty Fryfogle

San Antonio Brahmas Cut Down Roster For 2025 Season

As the San Antonio Brahmas look to chase another UFL Championship berth, the team cut down their roster today – fully setting it in stone for season two.

The Brahmas were a team that brought in quite a bit of new talent in the offseason. Some of those new faces were able to make their way onto the 50 man roster, while others have been released and are once again free agents.

Offense

WR Jaelen Gill
WR Ty Fryfogle
OL Justin Shaffer
OL Tyran Hunt
C Alex Pihlstrom

The Brahmas made just five offensive cuts. Starting out with the wide receivers, both Jaelen Gill and Ty Frygogle were let go. Gill isn’t much of a surprise, considering his late addition to the team in camp. However, Fryfogle – the former Kansas City Chief – was a prospect that many expected to do well within A.J. Smith’s offense. With the amount of studs at wideout, though, the Brahmas seem satisfied with who they currently roster.

San Antonio also let go of three offensive linemen. Pihlstrom was a carry over from 2024, but he didn’t see any action due to injury. Justin Shaffer and Tyran Hunt were two new signings, but neither end up making San Antonio’s final 50. With standouts such as Sam Tecklenburg, Greg Eiland, and Chuck Filiaga returning – it was expected that some of the fresh faces would be let go.

Defense

DT Jaylen Twyman
DT Marquan McCall
DE Jalen Harris
DE John Morgan
EDGE Zach McCloud
CB Kalon Barnes
DB Derrick Langford
S Christian Young

The defense is where things get interesting. San Antonio loaded up – especially on edge rushers – and had to make some tough decisions down the stretch of camp.

On the D-Line, two DT’s were let go. Marquan McCall and Jaylen Twyman got cut, two players who made their way to camp late, to replace Taron Vincent and Bryan Mone. Twyman spent some time with the Brahmas late in 2024, and flashed some legitimate potential.

At EDGE, the Brahmas cut Jalen Harris, John Morgan, and Zach McCloud. Zach was the only Brahma who was with the team a year ago, and he performed well when healthy. Harris and Morgan were two offseason additions, with Harris being acquired via trade with the DC Defenders. With such a loaded room at DE, there simply wasn’t enough room for everyone.

While listed as a safety, Christian Young was playing linebacker for San Antonio in camp. He was spoken highly of by DC Will Reed, but once again, Young is a result of a “numbers game”. Not everyone can stick, no matter how talented they are.

Finally, Kalon Barnes and Derrick Langford were released in the secondary. Langford joined the Brahmas late in the 2024 season, and ended up seeing starting minutes in the playoffs. San Antonio signed quite a few cornerbacks in the offseason, and Barnes ends up on the outside looking in as the season begins.

Final Thoughts

These cuts were by no means easy for the Brahmas. We were just speaking to Head Coach Wade Phillips yesterday, who highlighted how difficult it was to get through this process.

Now, though, the tough cuts are behind them, and the focus now shifts to the upcoming season. The Brahmas will face off against the Arlington Renegades to kick off their UFL campaign – a team they beat twice just one year ago.
