San Antonio Brahmas Add Another Eight Players For 2025

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the San Antonio Brahmas. They’ve made several cuts, while re-signing dozens – and also adding a couple of new faces to the roster. In their latest set of transactions, San Antonio signed eight players to Letters Of Intent for 2025.

WR Mathew Sexton

Just like that, Mathew Sexton finds himself back in the spring football scene. He burst into the limelight in The Spring League, dominating with the Aviators as a dynamic kick returner and wide receiver. This earned him an NFL stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

From there, Sexton landed in the XFL, playing with the Vegas Vipers in 2023. That season he totaled 364 receiving yards, which led to three different stops in the NFL with the Patriots, Falcons, and Dolphins – all on the practice squad.

Now, Mathew will bring depth, and NFL experience, to this San Antonio Brahmas roster.

WR Justin Smith

Justin Smith emerged as a legitimate target for the Brahmas this year in A.J. Smith’s offense. He spent the 2023 XFL season in Houston, performing well when his name was called upon – but it wasn’t until this season in the UFL that Smith earned more minutes.

In the UFL this season, Smith posted 264 yards and a touchdown. In addition, he had a big performance in the semi-finals against St. Louis, helping lift the Brahmas to the Championship game. His speed puts him in elite company at this level, and is someone who should continue to grow and develop with more time in spring football.

C Alex Pihlstrom

Alex Pihlstrom was an offseason addition for San Antonio, who was with the team for part of the season. He didn’t play any snaps in 2024, but returns to the roster to run it back in 2025. Alex spent time with the New Orleans Saints in 2023, after a lengthy college career at Illinois.

DT Bryan Mone

Bryan Mone is a big pickup for this defensive line. The San Antonio Brahmas featured one of the top defenses in the UFL this year, leading the league in sacks as a whole.

Mone has plenty of NFL experience, playing with the Seattle Seahawks for a few years. Across that span, he totaled 73 tackles and two sacks. Of the 41 games he played in the NFL, Mone made eight starts. He was released by Seattle in March of this year, and now will look to continue his pro career in the UFL with San Antonio.

LB Tavante Beckett

With Jordan Williams having re-signed this week, it’s no surprise to see his partner in crime back in action. Tavante Beckett has been one of spring football’s best over the past couple of years. He began his career with the Houston Roughnecks, registering 63 tackles and two interceptions.

Beckett was brought over to San Antonio with Wade Phillips in the USFL-XFL merger. He started in every game this season for the Brahmas, posting 74 tackles, nine TFL’s, and 1.5 sacks. This resulted in Tavante earning All-UFL honors in 2024. He’s an intelligent linebacker who knows where to be every single play – flying around the football field to make things happen every week.

DB BoPete Keyes

BoPete Keyes was another offseason addition for San Antonio this year, who worked his way into a starting role throughout the year. Keyes posted 14 tackles and a PBU with San Antonio in 2024. He’s another player who had some legitimate NFL experience (Kansas City, Indianapolis, Chicago) that translated well into the UFL. With another year upcoming in the Brahmas secondary, Bopete is someone who could see a larger role this season.

DB Corey Mayfield Jr.

One of the most underrated pickups for San Antonio over the past season was Corey Mayfield, who came into the UFL and performed quite well. He started in six of 12 games played with the Brahmas in 2024, totaling 25 tackles and five PBU’s. Mayfield also boasted a strong 70.3 Defensive Grade, via PFF. The former UTSA standout found a familiar home in San Antonio this year, and it’s no surprise to see him return to the secondary for another season.

DB Derrick Langford

Due to some of the injuries that the Brahmas dealt with at the end of the season, Derrick Langford joined the field for the final few weeks. Interestingly enough, Derrick had originally signed with the New Jersey Generals prior to the merger, but wasn’t picked up in the Dispersal Draft process.

Langford played in two games with the Brahmas (W10, Championship), posting six tackles across that span. He was targeted nine times in two matchups, allowing just four receptions. According to PFF, Langford had an above average coverage grade of 71.7 in the UFL this year.

Final Thoughts

General Manager Marc Lillibridge continues to make moves, securing pieces for 2025. The Brahmas are bringing back most of the same faces from 2024, while making a few adjustments here and there to strengthen specific position groups. The addition of Bryan Mone, in particular, is a big one – if he’s fully healthy, he’s got All-UFL potential.
