On Wednesday, a couple more transactions hit the UFL wire. The Dallas Renegades signed LB Matt Jones, while the Columbus Aviators released DT Jerron Cage.
The Renegades needed to make a move at linebacker. Andrew Dowell, the veteran, went down with an ugly injury on Friday night. He has since been placed on IR.
Matt Jones is a candidate who the Renegades had high hopes for in camp, but he was let go during cutdowns. Now, the former Baylor Bear makes his way back to Dallas – a talented player with ties to the area. Matt had an unbelievable collegiate career, racking up 317 tackles at Baylor (200 of which were solo).

Jones led the Bears in tackles his last couple of seasons. As a senior, he totaled 104 tackles, four sacks, and a forced fumble. Matt had a brief UDFA stint with the Las Vegas Raiders last summer. He’s known to be a solid run defender, along with the ability to disrupt passing lanes in zone coverage. Matt is a candidate who joins Dallas as someone with starting potential once he gets re-acclimated to Mike Gillhamer’s scheme.
For the Aviators, they just signed former All-UFL DT Perrion Winfrey. With that in mind, a corresponding move had to be made. Jerron Cage has been released, the former Ohio State Buckeye. He was one of the few members of this Columbus team who had legitimate ties to the city.
Jerron played in one game, back in week two. He had one tackle during his 18 snaps of action.
