On Tuesday, a couple of tight ends signed UFL contracts. The Dallas Renegades brought in Baylor Cupp, while the St. Louis Battlehawks added Shane Calhoun to their roster.
Baylor Cupp | Dallas Renegades
Cupp is a high ceiling athlete – which was evident when he was ranked as the #1 tight end in the country, ironically out of North Texas. At 6’6”, Baylor’s size made him a target coming out of high school, with several big college offers.
Baylor eventually decided on Texas A&M, staying in his home state. Injuries kept him off the field, though, and after a few years with the Aggies, transferred to Texas Tech. There, he recorded 246 yards and four touchdowns, doing enough to turn some heads in the NFL.
Injuries continue to keep Cupp down, though. He signed with the Chiefs, making his regular season debut in 2024 only to have a season ending injury after 10 snaps. Baylor now makes his way to the UFL, in hopes of remaining healthy and getting an opportunity to keep playing football.
Shane Calhoun | St. Louis Battlehawks
Calhoun is a stud, having the ability to play tight end, with a bit of receiver. At his pro day, he ran a 4.43 40 yard dash; which is faster than a good chunk of wideouts in this league. Speed at the TE position is exactly what A.J. Smith wants to hear for his offense, which runs a lot of spread action.
Shane began his college career at ECU, recording 594 yards and six touchdowns across four seasons. He then transferred to Texas A&M for his final year of eligibility, and showcased more of his game as a true blocker – with just three catches for 57 yards.
After a brief preseason stint with the Indianapolis Colts, Shane is a young prospect who joins the UFL. He’s got strong hands, speed, and can block – which means he should have the opportunity to make this roster.
