Released Text Messages Show Vince McMahon Refused to Allow Johnny Manziel in the XFL

In the lead up to the 2020 XFL season there was a lot of chatter amongst the fans on if or if-not Johnny Manziel would join the league. Vince McMahon was adamant Johnny Manziel would not be part of the XFL… and he was serious about it.

According to new text messages that have been revealed we’re learning that McMahon wanted no part of Johnny Football. He even went as far to order the league’s Commissioner and CEO Oliver Luck to keep him out of the football league, per Daniel Kaplan of The Athletic.

How long R U going to play this game Oliver? U know there is NO CHANCE IN HELL for Manziel to play for us,” McMahon sent in a text. “I will NOT change my mind. So what’s Ur plan??”

As Luck later revealed, the public discussion was a marketing ploy.

Vince—we have no intention of signing him, none whatsoever. We’re just milking the story to stay in the news,” he responded.

Fast forward to present day and McMahon is currently countersuing Luck over breach of contract, claiming the commissioner disobeyed orders to not allow players with bad backgrounds.

When he restarted the 2.0 version of the league, McMahon instituted strict rules on player behavior that included no players with a criminal record and no kneeling for the national anthem.

The Heisman Trophy winner pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in 2012 after being arrested following a fight in Texas. That was just one of many as he was also investigated for alleged domestic battery against his girlfriend in 2016.

Luck was fired and later filed a lawsuit against Vince McMahon for the remaining $23.8 million on his contract.

The XFL has since been sold to a group led by Dany Garcia, Dwayne Johnson and RedBird Capitol. Johnny Manziel is now with Fan Controlled Football, which is set to kickoff their inaugural season this February. With the new ownership group now in charge, all cards are on the table, there is absolutely a shot that Manziel appears in the XFL next year after his FCF obligations are completed. That is, if the new owners are interested.

Do you think McMahon was right in not wanting Manziel in the XFL? Would you like to see him join in the future? Let us know down in the comments below or join the conversation on Discord.

  1. “I’m afraid not,” this Johnny Mansqueal has a record of more negatives about him than a couple of silly misdemeanors. Don’t forget the horror of Betty White on the phone when she was asked about him, the poor old thing started speaking in tongues, she was so rattled. “I’m not getting involved with *that *!” said she, & with good reason. The guy is no Hernandez or Simpson lowest-level toxic waste & I certainly don’t have no ill will about him, but as has been amply demonstrated over decades, plenty of college players are not a good fit in the pros. (“Yoohoo, Timmy Tebow!”) If by some way Mansqueal has improved in his attitudes then O’Goody for him & best of luck; but now that this league is out of the clutches of Vinny “No Knees” MacMann (unless in direct service to him, I don’t doubt), if Lil John was to prove himself changed in whatever venue he now plays in, then I would say sure, Let Him In – & we then can all have a hearty laugh at Vinny No Knees & his ironfisted methods. Sure will be an interesting development!
