Since the UFL Dispersal Draft process a few weeks ago, there have been many questions and much speculation surrounding the DC Defenders quarterback situation. DC came out of the dispersal process with only two QBs (Deondre Francois and Jalan McClendon), compared to the rest of the league that at least had three rostered post-draft. Most of that speculation should be put to rest now, as the DC Defenders have agreed to terms with QB Jordan Ta’amu, per Mike Mitchell from SI.
JUST IN: Per @uflsifn, QB Jordan Ta’amu is returning to the DC Defenders.
The 2023 XFL Offensive Player of the Year had a fantastic season last year for DC, finishing with 1,878 passing yards with 14 touchdowns, and only 3 interceptions. He also added 301 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground.
Ta’amu led the Defenders to a 9-1 regular season record and XFL Championship appearance, before falling to Arlington in the big game. One must wonder if the sting of losing the championship game plays a part in his return to DC this season.
With a DC quarterback room that now includes three former XFL players with Jordan Ta’amu, Deondre Francois, and Jalan McClendon, Defenders fans should feel much more at ease nearing the new season. Ta’amu will head into training camp on February 24th with a sizable lead on any possible “QB competition”, but expect there to be a spirited competition for the QB2 spot between Francois and McClendon.
Keep in mind, the pay difference for players that are active and inactive on game days is quite sizable, and most teams only keep two quarterbacks active for a game.
