Pittsburgh Maulers Sign RB Trey Williams In USFL Free Agency

The Pittsburgh Maulers made a major splash in USFL free agency yesterday. Along the way, they signed RB Trey Williams, formerly of the New Jersey Generals.

Heading into free agency, Trey Williams was one of the top running backs available. He’s been an underrated asset in New Jersey through two seasons, and now signs with the Maulers for 2024.

Interestingly enough, I had written a piece months ago about how Williams could fit Pittsburgh’s scheme well, and why he would push their offense to another level.

Now, speculation has become reality. Trey Williams is in Pittsburgh, poised to take control of their backfield in 2024. This is quite the signing, especially considering free agent RB Rodney Smith just recently joined the team as well.

USFL Career

People forget just how talented Trey is. Despite sharing reps with Darius Victor in 2022, Trey posted 579 rushing yards – which was the second most in the entire USFL. He averaged 4.9 YPC, with a long of 61 yards in a week ten win against Philadelphia.

2023 told a different story. While Trey continued to perform at a high level, New Jersey decided to move away from Williams as a primary back, giving reps to Kingston Davis in his place. Additionally, Trey was questionably inactive for multiple games, including the final week ten loss against Pittsburgh.

Regardless, Trey Williams posted impressive numbers during the 2023 season. He registered 205 rushing yards on just 35 carries, averaging 5.8 YPC.

After ending on a sour note in New Jersey, it was clear that Trey was ready for a new home in free agency. The Maulers have provided him with exactly that, and now he is set to play in Pittsburgh in 2024.

Final Thoughts

In free agency, the Maulers have acquired former Panthers OL Brodarious Hamm, and Stars WR Diondre Overton. GM Dennis Polian & DC Jarren Horton have been quite busy so far, with more moves expected to come sooner than later.
