It has been a whirlwind of a week for the Philadelphia Stars. Amidst a blockbuster trade with Birmingham, the team signed CB David Vereen for the 2024 USFL season.
Free Agent Signings:
• CB David Vereen, Newberry
• DT Marvin Wilson, Florida State— Philadelphia Stars (@USFLStars) November 9, 2023
While Marvin Wilson was originally a part of this signing, he was shipped to the Stallions as the team acquired two offensive linemen.
However, they officially picked up David Vereen, who will bring some depth to the Stars secondary. After losing safety Cody Brown in the trade, this is an important signing for Philadelphia.
Vereen played his collegiate ball at Newberry College, where he put up impressive numbers for several years. David joined the team in 2017, posting 16 tackles and an interception in his first eight games.

He had an excellent sophomore campaign, with 31 tackles and two interceptions in 11 games. However, he would miss the 2019 season and part of the 2020 season due to an injury.
In 2021, David Vereen put himself back on the map. In 13 games he racked up 41 tackles, providing Newberry with impressive play.

From there, Vereen had a stint with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent. He was cut during the preseason, and landed with the Indianapolis Colts for a couple of months.
In 2023, Vereen went up north to play for the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He played in one game, notching four tackles.
Now, David is set to continue his professional career in the USFL, with the Philadelphia Stars.
Final Thoughts
General Manager Michael Woods has made quite a few moves in the USFL offseason. The team has re-signed important pieces, while also bringing in quality talent to fill out the roster for 2024.
Speaking of filling out the roster, the team now sits at 58 signed players. As of right now, 58 is the cap for training camp. This could change with the impending merger, but for now, the Stars cannot sign any new players without releasing someone else before training camp begins.
That being said, QB K.J. Costello, TE Bug Howard, and LB Jordan Moore are currently on the inactive/suspended list. If they do not return to the Stars, those three roster spots will open.
