Philadelphia Stars Sign Former Buccaneers WR Cyril Grayson

Philadelphia Stars Sign Former Buccaneers WR Cyril Grayson

The Philadelphia Stars are on a roll. This team has won three straight, rebounding nicely in the USFL North Division. Now, the Stars gain some more depth at the WR position, signing Cyril Grayson.

This is a much needed pickup. Through weeks 4-5, the Stars lost both Chris Rowland and Jordan Suell for the season. Rowland and Suell were two of the team’s top targets, having been with Philadelphia for the past two years.

Case Cookus and the offense certainly could use some help, and that’s exactly what they’re getting with Cyril Grayson. The former NFL wideout is ready for the next chapter in his career, in a story that has taken several remarkable turns.

Cyril Grayson’s Unique Story

The journey that Grayson took to make it to the NFL is quite the tale. Cyril never played college ball – in fact, he wasn’t even allowed to play for the LSU Tigers due to one stigma: he was a track star. Since he was on the track team, an NCAA rule blocked Grayson from playing for the football team until his junior year.

Once that opportunity presented itself, it disappeared in a blink of an eye – with no football scholarships available.

Not ready to give up quite yet, Cyril Grayson was able to participate in LSU’s pro day in 2017, in which he turned heads by running a 4.33 40 yard dash.

Remember, Grayson was at LSU because he was a star in track and field, finishing his career with four NCAA crowns, an SEC title, and seven All-America honors.

NFL Career

With the attention received after his pro day, Grayson ended up signing with the Seattle Seahawks. He then had stints with several NFL teams, before landing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021.

It was there where he finally saw the NFL success that he had hoped for – racking up 212 receiving yards and two touchdowns that season with the team. In fact, he won a super bowl with Tampa Bay that very year: which is the ultimate success story.

However, an injury would hamper his NFL future, and result in the Buccaneers eventually looking to other options at the wideout position.

Final Thoughts

Now, Cyril Grayson will look to revive his professional career in the USFL. A healthy Grayson might just be the fastest wide receiver in the league, and he’ll look to make his mark as the USFL season comes to a close.

This signing comes at a perfect time for the Philadelphia Stars, who are finally hitting their stride as an offense. They put up 37 points in a win against Pittsburgh last weekend, and now sit atop the North Division with a 4-3 record.

Bart Andrus has this team trending in the right direction – and picking up Grayson might be the boost they need to get to the Championship game in Canton once again.

The Philadelphia Stars will play the Birmingham Stallions in week eight, at 3pm ET on NBC.
