Philadelphia Eagles Signing USFL Star WR Deon Cain

Philadelphia Eagles Signing USFL Star WR Deon Cain

The Birmingham Stallions are sending another player to the NFL. Deon Cain has just signed with the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of training camp, after impressing in the USFL this season.

Deon Cain joined the Stallions before season two began, looking to bring depth to a team that had lost Victor Bolden in the offseason.

The former Clemson standout was excellent this year, despite dealing with some obstacles along the way, such as an illness that kept him sidelined for a few weeks.

USFL Season

Cain was highly regarded as one of the top special team threats in the USFL. In weeks three and four, he took kicks back to the house – which included the go-ahead touchdown against Pittsburgh in Canton.

After such an electric start, Cain took a couple of weeks off due to an illness. Once he re-joined the active roster, he made an immediate impact, helping secure a playoff berth in week nine.

Deon Cain likely solidified his trip back to the NFL with his USFL Championship performance. Cain posted 171 total yards, while catching four passes for 70 yards – and three touchdowns. He was unstoppable, ultimately earning USFL Championship MVP honors for his efforts.

The 2023 season was full of Deon Cain highlights. He finished the year with 182 receiving yards and two touchdowns – while posting 668 kick return yards as well.

Final Thoughts

After a long and agonizing wait, we finally know where Deon is headed. The Birmingham Stallions have been on a tear. Of the seven USFL players to sign with NFL teams, six of them are from Birmingham. WR Davion Davis and TE Jace Sternberger just signed with their respective NFL organizations yesterday.

Now, Deon Cain is headed back to the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. Had it not been for the platform – and the national exposure – that the USFL provided him with, who knows if this opportunity would have come along.

  1. So with these signings it appears at this time there will be some questions in how the Stallions will move forward. There will be 600 players that will be cut end of August. Some of these players may be on that list, so it’s possible they could be back, but also new blood will be in the mix. There are a lot of kickers out there to replace Brandon Audrey should he stick in the NFL. Among them would be Nick Vogel and he has been excellent in Birmingham and his college field. That might be a win-win. Hopefully Marlon Williams will come back healthy and alleviate some of the concerns, but in addition to wide receivers of the 600 that become available, maybe Skip can speak with the likes of Auden Tate who might complement Williams nicely. And don’t forget Lance Lenoir, Christian Blake, JJ Koski, Antonio Callaway, even Ben Putman would be open all day working across the middle. Plus they already have nice pieces such as Adrian Hardy, Thaddeus Moss, LaMichael Pettway and they seemed quite high on Josh Johnson. In case you hadn’t noticed, they do pretty well with receivers down there.
