Mathew Sexton is a spring football journeyman. He played in The Spring League for the Aviators in 2020, and was quite impressive as a receiver and a return man. This earned him an NFL stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021.
The punt return that kept the Aviators undefeated hopes alive.
From there, Mathew Sexton ended up signing with the Vegas Vipers for the 2023 XFL season. While the Vipers struggled as a team to win football games, Sexton made a difference when utilized. He started in 3 of 10 games played, posting 364 receiving yards.
Mathew averaged 15.8 yards per reception, showcasing his abilities to get open despite his smaller size. In addition, he racked up 101 punt return yards and 49 kick return yards.
This led to Sexton signing with the Atlanta Falcons during training camp. He ultimately made the practice squad, but was then released in September.
Now, Mathew is signing with the New England Patriots practice squad. Had it not been for the national platform that the XFL provided him with, who knows if this opportunity would have been made possible.
