Minnesota Vikings Sign Former Brahmas K John Parker Romo

In the midst of the chaos of UFL Training Camp, another spring football athlete is headed to the NFL. John Parker Romo signed a contract with the Minnesota Vikings, after impressing in the XFL last year with the San Antonio Brahmas.

John Parker Romo was arguably the best kicker in the XFL during the 2023 season. He finished the year with a 17-19 statline, and made all eight kicks from between 40-49 yards out.

For San Antonio, the team struggled to score touchdowns for most of the season, which meant that Romo was a key piece to their offense week in and week out. The XFL did not use kickers on extra points, which is why John did not have any XP attempts in 2023.

Interestingly enough, Parker Romo actually set a record at Lumen Field for the longest made field goal there, from 57 yards out.

After the XFL season concluded, John Parker Romo was signed by the Detroit Lions, and then spent some time with the Chicago Bears.

He opted not to come back to spring football, passing up the opportunity to return to the Brahmas. Instead, he just recently attended Gary Zauner’s kicking combine, and won the competition with a 64 yard kick. According to Tom Pelissero, this led to three offers being made, with the Vikings ultimately picking him up.

It’s also worth noting that the Vikings have not re-signed Greg Joseph, who has been the team’s kicker for the past few years.

Final Thoughts

While it’s been over a year since the XFL season kicked off last year, we continue to see why these leagues are so important. Without the platform that the XFL provided him with in 2023, these NFL contracts likely would not have been possible.

Now, the United Football League is taking the best from the XFL and the USFL, and we’re expecting plenty of UFL to NFL signings to be made once the season concludes in June.

In other news, with Parker Romo not returning to San Antonio, their kicker in 2024 is currently set to be Deestroying (Donald De La Haye Jr.).
