Michigan Panthers Sign Terry Wright, Cut Mika Tafua

Amidst some roster movement this week, the Michigan Panthers have brought back WR Terry Wright. In a sense, Wright had never officially been with the team, since he did not report to Training Camp.

Terry Wright was picked up by Michigan originally during the USFL Dispersal Draft. He was a part of a massive haul of Philadelphia Stars players to the team.

Wright did not report to camp due to personal reasons. He wasn’t cleared to play football for a time, but just recently was given the green light to return – hence why the Panthers have officially signed him now.

This is a big move for Michigan as the playoffs approach. They have had zero consistency in the return game, largely due to injuries. Now, with Terry Wright coming into play, they may have found their guy.

Wright was sensational with the Philadelphia Stars a season ago. He ended up taking kick return duties after Chris Rowland went down, finishing with 760 return yards. Wright was a key piece in their win over the New Jersey Generals in week five – setting up Luis Aguilar’s game winning field goal.

Terry came into his own as a receiver down the stretch of the USFL season as well. He finished the year with 143 receiving yards, and two touchdowns. Now, he’ll take his electrifying talents to the UFL, with the Michigan Panthers.

Mika Tafua Released

The Panthers have released DE Mika Tafua. This one comes a bit out of left field. Tafua was not utilized much, but made an impact when on the field. Mika posted four tackles this season, and had a solid Defensive Grade of 77.2 via PFF.

Tafua was also an important piece on special teams, playing 108 snaps across kickoff and punt coverages this year. With the depth Michigan has, Mika finds himself on the outside looking in as the team approaches the postseason.

Final Thoughts

General Manager Steve Kazor deserves more credit for what he’s done in Michigan this offseason. Mike Nolan has spoken highly of what Steve has accomplished for this team as of late, and rightfully so. He continues to bring in quality pieces, and Michigan is clearly one of the top teams in the UFL when it comes to talent.

With a 5-2 record and playoffs already clinched, the Panthers now shift their focus to refining the final pieces ahead of their showdown against Birmingham.

Most recently, the team waived WR’s Gavin Holmes and John Hightower.
