Michigan Panthers Return E.J. Perry, Lose Bryce Perkins

As the UFL postseason approaches, the Michigan Panthers continue to see shakeups on both offense and defense. They’ve returned E.J. Perry off of injured reserve, but in turn, have placed star QB Bryce Perkins on that same list after suffering an injury in week ten.

Quarterback Movement

It’s incredibly unfortunate to see Bryce Perkins go down the way he did. Bryce was an absolute spark for this offense, having signed midway through the season as the replacement for Perry. He split time with Danny Etling and Brian Lewerke over the past few weeks, and shined as one of the top quarterbacks in the entire UFL.

He got hurt in the third quarter against Birmingham this weekend, leaping through the air for a big gain. While you love to see the aggression, in a rather meaningless week 10 matchup, one has to wonder if Bryce is now regretting his decision. Now, Michigan will be without him in the postseason.

In week nine, Perkins single handedly led the Panthers back from a double digit deficit in the second half. His ability to use his legs and create something out of nothing was exactly what this Michigan offense was looking for.

Bryce wraps up his UFL season with 343 passing yards, completing 78% of his pass attempts. He threw two touchdowns and an interception, but also added 181 yards and two scores on the ground.

Now, E.J. Perry is back in action, and could potentially make a return as QB2 for this weekend. Perry went down with an injury back in week four against San Antonio, but he was the starter for those first few games. Time will tell as to what his status will look like, but having Etling and Perry in the lineup would be crucial for Michigan if they want to move onto the Championship.

DaShaun White & Vantrel McMillan Back

The Michigan Panthers have also brought back two familiar faces. LB DaShaun White has re-signed with the team, having been released a couple of weeks ago to make room for Bumper Pool.

White was a USFL College Draft Pick for the Panthers back in 2023, signing with the team midway through that season. In 2024, he had 8 tackles and a PBU prior to his release.

Vantrel McMillan has also returned to the team. McMillan was on this Michigan roster from 2022-2023, totaling 16 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He was present during Training Camp, but had been released during cut downs.

Given some of the injuries that Michigan has dealt with, it makes sense for GM Steve Kazor to bring back players who are familiar with the systems already in place.

Final Thoughts

In other unfortunate news, the Panthers have placed DE Jesus Gibbs on IR. Gibbs was an NFL Draft prospect who ended up signing with Michigan several weeks into the season. He immediately made an impact, with two tackles and a forced fumble. Gibbs played 47 snaps this year.

With their playoff matchup just a few days away against the Birmingham Stallions, the Michigan Panthers will have to hope that everyone else remains healthy prior to kickoff. They’ve lost quite a few key pieces over the last several weeks – and cannot afford to lose any more.
