Pittsburgh Maulers Sign RB Trey Williams In USFL Free Agency | Memphis Showboats

Memphis Showboats Sign RB Trey Williams, Troy Warner Retires

The Memphis Showboats made another free agency addition to start the week, signing RB Trey Williams to the roster.

Trey Williams is a fantastic signing for the Showboats. He’s been an electric playmaker with the New Jersey Generals for the past two USFL seasons. In free agency, he jumped ship and signed with the Pittsburgh Maulers, who ultimately didn’t make the USFL-XFL merger.

USFL Career

People forget just how talented Trey is. Despite sharing reps with Darius Victor in 2022, Trey posted 579 rushing yards – which was the second most in the entire USFL. He averaged 4.9 YPC, with a long of 61 yards in a week ten win against Philadelphia.

2023 told a different story. While Trey continued to perform at a high level, New Jersey decided to move away from Williams as a primary back, giving reps to Kingston Davis in his place. Additionally, Trey was questionably inactive for multiple games, including the final week ten loss against Pittsburgh.

Regardless, Trey Williams posted impressive numbers during the 2023 season. He registered 205 rushing yards on just 35 carries, averaging 5.8 YPC.

After ending on a sour note in New Jersey, it was clear that Trey was ready for a new home in free agency. Since bouncing around between Pittsburgh – and then becoming a free agent again – Williams has landed with the Showboats. Interestingly enough, he now reunites with Darius Victor, who was picked up by Memphis during the dispersal draft process.

Trey has a plethora of alt-football experience. He’s played in the AAF with the San Antonio Commanders, and was a part of the XFL in 2020 with the Seattle Dragons.

Troy Warner Retires

Another piece of news that comes as a bit of a surprise is the retirement of Troy Warner. Warner was a starting safety for the Showboats in 2023, and was stellar with 71 tackles and an interception. His brother – Fred Warner – is the starting linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers.

Heading into training camp, it was expected that Warner would maintain a starting role given his success in 2023. Now, the Showboats will have to find the next man up to fill his role in 2024.

Final Thoughts

As covered in previous articles, the Memphis Showboats will feature a much different look in 2024. The team has undergone a makeover with the additions of John DeFilippo and Dennis Polian at Head Coach and General Manager.

Most recently, the Showboats signed WR Josh Vann, alongside DE Kahzin Daniels. With 73 of their 75 roster spots filled, there are two openings left for training camp which begins in just a few days.

  1. It’s funny. I was just saying in a comment a wish list of some teams with some last minute shopping before training camp. In it I mentioned Trey Williams as a back up running back with starter potential should the lead back go down. In Memphis he is a good place as the only other team in the league other than the Generals that could run wide was the Breakers and the HC and half the line came over in the dispersal draft. This is a better outcome them he playing Pittsburgh where every run was up the middle. So far, I believe he has had every pro carry for a Mike Riley coached team, where has has succeeded at a high level. Moving on to John D’s Showboats is a great place for him. It also might help that through the dispersal draft, this was the only opportunity he has come across. He has shown to be a talented back that can read his blocks, one who keeps in shape who although unsigned is likely in almost camp shape. It’s possible that he was not yet in anyone’s camp due to the article in which he discussed how he looked to run over his former team. Mike Riley who had him on his team 4 years at 3 different stops had to have some loyalty to Williams and Williams excelled for him so why would Riley change from him. Was it due to age or was it because Williams felt his age and wanted his chance. We don’t know the answer, we do know Williams can run and read blocks. Hopefully, that is what Williams realizes he is best at too. Remember think of Williams as an arm. A very important piece of one’s body for sure, but if it has cancer it must be jettisoned for the rest of the body. The good thing is the Showboats have a QB that could move the chains, where the Generals largely had 3 and outs of a big play. That type of gameplay, leads to less carries to be shared. The Showboats will not have that issue. The other players one that list where Auden Tate who has since been signed by the CFL, Sal Cannella, Benny Snell Jr, Johnnie Dixon, Juwan Green, Rashad Ross (specifically for DC), Alonzo Moore and Bailey Gaither For role players Mason Stokke, Hunter Thedford, 3rd down back Paul Terry and Garrett Groshek on offense. D’Juan Hines, DQ Thomas, Nate Holley, Trae Elston and Paris Ford (maybe to help a Showboats secondary). Specialists Brandon Wright and Nick Sciba are out there.
