Memphis Showboats Sign QB Troy Williams In UFL Free Agency

It’s been a busy month for the Memphis Showboats, as they’ve continued to add quality talent to the roster. In their latest move, the team has signed QB Troy Williams – formerly of the Pittsburgh Maulers.

This is an excellent pickup for Memphis, for more reasons than one. Williams is a dual threat quarterback, and put that on full display in Pittsburgh this past season.

Troy Williams has had quite the journey to get to this point. He played his college football at Utah, where he became the starter for the majority of the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Across that span, Williams registered over 3,500 passing yards, alongside 17 touchdowns.

Since then, Troy has had a couple of opportunities in the CFL, including a short stint with the Edmonton Elks. His time in the CFL ended in 2022, which led to Troy signing to the Pittsburgh Maulers in September of 2022.

USFL Tenure

It was an interesting year for Troy with Pittsburgh. He did not start the first two games, serving as the backup to James Morgan. The offense was, for lack of a better term, a disaster. After an 0-2 start, Head Coach Ray Horton handed the keys to Troy Williams, who rallied the team to a 4-4 record, sneaking into the playoffs at 4-6.

Williams was the heart and soul of Pittsburgh’s offense in 2023. He finished the season with 1,414 passing yards and six touchdowns – but what isn’t talked about enough is his impact as a runner. Williams racked up 341 rushing yards and three scores on the ground, and was actually the Maulers’ leading rusher in 2023.

Troy threw for 203 yards and a touchdown in the postseason against Michigan, leading the team to the Championship in a thrilling overtime win.

While Pittsburgh fell short in their matchup against Birmingham, Williams overachieved in an offensive system that was, quite frankly, the worst in the USFL.

Moving Forward In Memphis

Now, Troy Williams is bringing his talents to the Memphis Showboats. GM Dennis Polian and HC John DeFilippo have reconstructed the quarterback room in Memphis, having picked up Case Cookus in the Dispersal Draft earlier this month.

In addition, the team has released QB Guy Myers, alongside QB Ryan Willis. Myers was an offseason signing for the team, while Willis spent the 2023 season in Memphis, primarily as QB3.

Still on the roster is Cole Kelley, who became the Showboats starter in week three, and retained that role through the end of the season. With Todd Haley no longer coaching, though, the starting job is clearly up for grabs between Cookus, Kelley, and now Williams.
