Kirby Wilson Out, Ray Horton In For USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers

In another turn of events in the world of spring football, the USFL is seeing a head coaching change once again. Kirby Wilson, head coach of the Pittsburgh Maulers, has stepped down from his position. Ray Horton will take over as the team’s new head coach.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, was the first to break this news. Ray Horton takes control for Pittsburgh, a team that will be looking to turn things around in 2023.

In 2022 the Pittsburgh Maulers finished in last place in the North Division. The team struggled for most of the year, only winning one game. Pittsburgh did boast plenty of talent, with multiple players signing onto NFL teams in the offseason. The on-field product was a bit underwhelming, however, considering the final record.

Now, Ray Horton will be stepping in as the new head coach. Horton has plenty of NFL experience. He served in various defensive roles with the Washington Commanders, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ray Horton In The USFL

Daryl Johnston had this to say about Horton:

We are thrilled Ray Horton is joining the USFL family as the new Pittsburgh Maulers head coach…He helped the Steelers win two Super Bowls as an assistant coach, so Pittsburgh football fans know him. He also won a Super Bowl as a player and my teammate on the 1992 Dallas Cowboys. Ray is a great leader and an even better person, and I’m excited to be teammates with him once again.

Horton is clearly excited to be in the league:

I’m humbled to join the USFL as the new Pittsburgh Maulers head coach…We’re returning a solid core from one of the best defenses in the league, including All-USFL safety Bryce Torneden and Pittsburgh native Tre Tarpley. As we look for the next great quarterback in the USFL, I’m also excited about our returning offensive core. We will stay focused on delivering a USFL championship to Pittsburgh Maulers fans.

Interestingly enough, Ray’s son Jarren currently serves as the Maulers DC. Jarren was with Pittsburgh in season one of the USFL, and will retain the same role in 2023.
