On Tuesday night, five days before the season opener, the CoFL announced the Indianapolis Capitols will be ceasing operations for the 2026 season. This is the second CoFL team to announce their intentions of not playing in the 2026 season, with the Michigan Arrows folding a few weeks prior.
In the presser, the league announced their intentions to return for a 2027 season. This leaves only six full time teams to play out the CoFL season. The Norfolk Neptunes, who replaced the Michigan Arrows, will only be playing out the scheduled away games.
Also announced in the press release was the league’s continued commitment to the North Division. News on how they will replace the Capitols will come within the next 48 hours. When the Arrows folded in April, their players were offered to the remaining teams.
The Indianapolis Capitols were originally slated to be coached by legendary Air Raid figure, Hal Mumme. Mumme has been in and out of spring football for a plethora of years, as one of the brightest minds in the space. It’s a shame that the Capitols weren’t able to play a down this year under his leadership.
Only time will tell if the CoFL will actually play out their season, but moves like these always make Alt-Football fans concerned about the authenticity of these leagues.
