Houston Roughnecks Sign WR Whop Philyor, Release Two DB’s

The Houston Roughnecks made a couple of moves in UFL Training Camp yesterday. WR Whop Philyor has joined the team – who is no stranger to spring football – and the organization also released a couple of cornerbacks.

It’s intriguing to see Houston sign another wide receiver, as they already have a loaded room. Whop Philyor now brings his talents to the Roughnecks, to compete for a roster spot over the coming weeks.

Whop was signed by the Michigan Panthers last year, and originally made the final roster. However he was let go early on in the season, without any playing time, and has remained a free agent since.

Philyor had an excellent career at Indiana. He racked up 2,067 receiving yards and 12 scores, starting in 19 of his final 20 games played with the Hoosiers. During his junior season, he earned Second Team All-Big Ten Conference honors.

Coming out of Indiana, Philyor garnered some NFL attention. He was signed as an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings, and was on their practice squad for a time. During the 2021 NFL preseason, Whop caught three passes for 54 yards.

Nick Grant & Shahman Moore Released

The Roughnecks made a couple of releases already. Defensive backs Nick Grant and Shahman Moore have been waived in the wake of Whop’s signing.

Nick played with the Houston Gamblers in 2023, and was a starter for most of the season. It’s a bit of a surprise to see Grant released so early in camp, as he posted 28 tackles last year and was protected through the draft process by Lionel Vital and Curtis Johnson.

On the other hand, Moore was a new addition this offseason. He originally was picked up by the XFL’s Orlando Guardians, before signing with Houston after the dispersal draft process was over.

Teams will be cutting down to 58 players on March 10th, but it is expected that some players will be waived prior to that date.
