Houston Roughnecks Sign WR Kirk Merritt In UFL Free Agency

The Houston Roughnecks made another addition this past weekend, signing free agent WR Kirk Merritt for the 2024 UFL season.

Kirk began his college career at Oregon. He wasn’t active much, catching five passes for 61 yards. He then had to play at East Mississippi Community College for a year, racking up 628 receiving yards and four touchdowns that season.

Merritt broke open his career at Arkansas State, where he spent his final two collegiate years. There, he registered over 1,800 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns in two seasons, earning All-SunBelt honors both years.

This led to a couple of stints in the NFL, with the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. Kirk Merritt caught one pass in the 2021 NFL season with Miami, for 13 total yards.

He’s been with the Saints for the past couple of years, primarily on the practice squad. Merritt has had several catches over the past two preseasons, but was let go this fall.

Now, he’ll look to continue his professional career in the UFL, with the Houston Roughnecks.

Final Thoughts

GM Lionel Vital has built up a stacked wide receiver room in Houston. Right now, the team also rosters:

Isiah Hennie
Justin Hall
Teo Redding
Steven Dunbar
Cyril Grayson
KeKe Chism
Anthony Ratliff-Williams
Emmaunel Butler
Gene Coleman

With 79 players currently on the roster (that we know of), a few cuts will have to be made before training camp begins in mid February. The deadline for 75-man rosters to be finalized is February 14th.
