Houston Roughnecks Sign LB Christian Sam, Gabriel Sewell Out

The injury bug has gotten to the Houston Roughnecks again. LB Gabriel Sewell was knocked out of the game this past week, which leads to Christian Sam – the spring veteran – signing with the team.

Christian Sam

Christian Sam is a familiar face in the spring football scene. He played with the Jousters of the TSL in 2021, assisting in bringing that team to the Mega Bowl Championship that year.

In 2022, Sam joined the USFL. He primarily played with the Tampa Bay Bandits, but right at the end of the season, was released – and immediately got picked up by the New Orleans Breakers. Across that span, Sam totaled 54 tackles and an interception.

This led to an NFL stint with the Dallas Cowboys. Sam was the first USFL to NFL signing of the 2022 offseason. He eventually was let go with an injury release.

Christian took some time off to get healthy, which is why he didn’t play in 2023. He was signed by the Arlington Renegades ahead of the 2024 season – but was let go prior to training camp’s end.

Now, he’ll look to get back on track professionally with the Houston Roughnecks.

Gabriel Sewell Out For Season

Gabriel Sewell, the former Philadelphia Stars standout, is done for the year, sources tell Pro Football Newsroom. Sewell joined the Houston Roughnecks this offseason through the Dispersal Draft process.

In 2024, he posted 19 tackles for the Roughnecks. He started in four games, and saw action in all seven so far. Unfortunately, this weekend was where he got injured. Sewell has been a contributor on special teams, and went down during a punt coverage play.

Gabriel wraps up his UFL campaign with a 60.6 Defensive Grade via PFF. His strongest category was pass rush, with a season grade of 77.1. We’re wishing Gabriel a speedy recovery ahead of the 2025 season.

Final Thoughts

It’s great to see Christian Sam get another opportunity on this platform. However, it is disappointing that it comes at the cost of Gabriel Sewell, who has been one of the most consistent linebackers in the game since his time with the Stars.

For the Houston Roughnecks, these final three weeks will be an opportunity for GM Lionel Vital and HC Curtis Johnson to evaluate the talent they have. Houston was eliminated from playoff contention after blowing a late lead to the San Antonio Brahmas.
