In a move that has come to the surprise of many, the Houston Roughnecks have rebranded back to the Gamblers. With the UFL announcing three brands today in the new markets, the league has also decided to shake up the Roughnecks back to the Gamblers.
This is a rather unique move by the UFL. Originally, in the USFL-XFL merger, it was the Houston Gamblers who had rebranded back to the Roughnecks. This decision was made because the Roughnecks were the stronger brand in the XFL. Brand recognition is a big thing, and the Roughnecks were at the time, much more popular.
Fast forward a couple of years, and we’ve seen the decline in attendance in Houston. It was so bad, that many of us thought that the Roughnecks would be relocating.
However, the league looks to address that with the implementation of a new venue. As we reported earlier this week, the Gamblers will now be playing at Shell Energy Stadium. It’s an MLS stadium used by the Houston Dynamo, with a capacity around 22,000. This is an excellent business decision by Mike Repole and the league, as they look to revive Houston in 2026.
Now, the piece of the puzzle that makes little sense: going back to the Gamblers branding. Not only did they rebrand the team (again), but they changed up the classic, vintage Gamblers logo. The only reason to bring back the Gamblers, in any form, would be to reintroduce the branding that would resonate with fans from that era. It’s also a rather odd move considering that gambling itself isn’t fully legalized in the state of Texas.
At the end of the day, though, this is what the executives at the UFL believed would be the best route to take. Regardless of branding, moving to Shell Energy Stadium is excellent news. Now, it appears that C.J. Johnson and his crew will be able to welcome back the Gamblers name – something they had taken away from them in the merger.
The Houston Gamblers in the USFL went 3-7 in 2022, under Kevin Sumlin’s leadership. C.J. Johnson took over as Head Coach in 2023, with the team featuring a 5-5 record. In the UFL, under the Roughnecks branding, the organization has gone 6-14 across two seasons.
