Houston Gamblers Re-sign Kenji Bahar and Montell Cozart Ahead of USFL Free Agency | Houston Roughnecks UFL Super Draft

Houston Roughnecks Bring Back QB Kenji Bahar

It didn’t take long for the Houston Roughnecks to bring in another quarterback. Kenji Bahar has signed back to the team, in the wake of the injury to starting QB Jarrett Guarantano.

While Houston Roughnecks fans may not recognize Bahar, this is because he played with the USFL’s Houston Gamblers in 2023. The Gamblers organization morphed into the Roughnecks, but at its core, it is the personnel, players, and staff from the USFL iteration.

Kenji Bahar began his spring football journey with the Gamblers in 2022. He ended up taking over for Clayton Thorson down the stretch of the season, totaling 541 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also led the team to an upset win over the undefeated Birmingham Stallions.

In 2023, Kenji ended up earning the starting role under new Head Coach Curtis Johnson. While the Gamblers got off to a slow start, they went on a winning streak, largely due to the efforts of Bahar.

During his 2023 USFL campaign, Bahar threw for 1,712 yards and eight touchdowns, while throwing nine interceptions. He did struggle with protecting the football at times, which hurt them during a couple of must-win games in weeks nine and ten.

That said, this signing makes perfect sense for the Roughnecks. With Reid Sinnett slated to take over as the starter, Nolan Henderson will back him up as QB2. Bahar will join the team as the emergency QB3, and is someone who can make an impact if needed. He already has a full year of experience in OC Eric Price’s system, and has been a starter at the spring football level.

Final Thoughts

The Houston Roughnecks have had to deal with some tough injuries over the past weekend. Alongside Jarrett Guarantano going down, WR Kirk Merritt also suffered what appears to be a season-ending injury.

With the open spots on the roster, expect General Manager Lionel Vital to potentially make another move or two over the next few days.

The Houston Roughnecks will travel to Michigan to face off against the Panthers this Sunday, at 12pm ET on ABC.
