Green Bay Packers Signing USFL MVP QB Alex McGough

Green Bay Packers Signing USFL MVP QB Alex McGough

Alex McGough took the USFL by storm this year, in an unprecedented season that resulted in MVP honors. The Green Bay Packers clearly took notice, having held McGough for a workout this morning.

According to Aaron Wilson, the Green Bay Packers intend on signing Alex McGough. This would be the fourth USFL to NFL signing since the season ended (with Deon Cain’s signing still pending).

Alex has plenty of NFL interest, with reportedly 1/3 of the league intrigued by his talent. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans were also looking to workout McGough this week, but Green Bay might be snagging him away while they still can.

McGough was absolutely sensational in the USFL this season. He has now won back-to-back Championships with the Birmingham Stallions, but showed major growth in 2023 with full command of the offense. A fully healthy Alex McGough was extremely dangerous, posting:

180/267 (67.4%)
2,104 passing yards
7.9 YPA
20 passing TD
5 INT
108.3 QBR

In addition, his rushing was off the charts:

403 rushing yards
5.8 YPC
5 rushing TD

With Alex McGough now officially signing with the Green Bay Packers, he will be in a position to win a backup role. The Packers depth at the QB position is relatively thin, featuring Jordan Love, Sean Clifford, and Danny Etling. While Love appears to be the clear starter, QB2 and QB3 roles are up for grabs.

Final Thoughts

Regardless of what ultimately happens, it’s excellent to see top USFL athletes being recognized for their efforts. Had it not been for the platform – and the national exposure – that the USFL provided him with, who knows if this opportunity would have come along.
