With week one of the UFL in the books, there was a bit of movement following this weekend’s action. The Houston Gamblers already releasing players, while the St. Louis Battlehawks and Columbus Aviators saw some movement of their own.
Houston Gamblers
The Houston Gamblers have released safety Markel Roby. Markel has been a key defensive player for C.J. Johnson’s Roughnecks the last two years, and made it through the regime change with Kevin Sumlin. However, with the 36 points allowed on Saturday, we knew changes were going to hit Houston.
Roby did not have his best showing on Saturday, which included a dropped interception. Now, Markel’s past resume does speak for itself – and it is a bit strange that the Gamblers have let him go already. He’s a proven veteran in this space, who simply had an off game. Expect him to get claimed off of waivers soon.
St. Louis Battlehawks
The Battlehawks lost veteran safety Kameron Kelly to IR in Saturday’s win over DC. He was hit hard by Briley Moore in the early second half, which led to him being ruled out for the rest of the game. Kelly, a two year starter in St. Louis, was poised to be a key defensive piece for the Battlehawks again this year. It’s unclear what the injury is related to, but he will now have to miss at least five games due to league IR rules.
In his place is Keylon Kennedy, another veteran who returns. Keylon was with the Battlehawks the past two training camps, but couldn’t find a way to stick on the roster. Now, with Kelly headed to IR, it gives him the chance to make something shake early this UFL season.
Columbus Aviators
In more unpleasant news, WR Devin Ross is headed to IR without even playing a snap. Devin has had very unfortunate luck in spring football, ending up on the injured reserve list almost every season. Hopefully, this particular injury won’t knock him out for the rest of the year. He was poised to be one of the starting return men for Columbus.
