Details from the DC Defenders Post Draft Celebration

It’s been nearly twenty years since the XFL came and went, temporarily pulling fans with it’s players with wacky names and theatrics. WWE brainchild and esteemed businessman Vince McMahon has revamped the XFL, creating eight initial franchises across the country. The D.C. Defenders held their first meet and greet in the Nation’s Capital Thursday to toast to new beginnings.

Penn Social is a happening spot on weekdays in Northwest D.C., equipped with an extended happy hour and arcade games to entertain. Defenders head coach Pep Hamilton, quarterback Cardale Jones and Team President Eric Moses took to the lounge for a fan meet and greet. A turnout of over 100 prospective fans was welcoming, as the event was just announced Wednesday evening following the XFL Draft. Season ticket holders and prospective fans received free gear and food and spirits as they got to chat with the faces of their new franchise. The loud sounds of Top-40 hits blaring through the speakers forced many to yell their praise for Jones and Hamilton in their ears, as the two made their way around the room shaking hands and taking photos.

Midway through, the trio took to the stage to answer questions from the fans.

“We’re excited to bring a winner to D.C.” said Hamilton, to the applause of his new fans.

With the nearby Washington Redskins organization in dismay, the trio took the questions seriously from several patrons who expressed their desire to have a winning football team again.

Many had questions for Jones, the former champion Ohio State quarterback, who last played for the Los Angeles Chargers.

“I want to leave my footprint, and set a blueprint” said Jones, who was the Defenders assigned quarterback before the draft.

Washington selected fellow former Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback Tyree Jackson late on Day 1. As of now, it’s Jones’ job to lose. It’ll be four months before we see the Defenders take their first snap at Audi Field. But a first impression is a lasting one, and it seems like they’ve won over their new fans.
