On Friday, the United Football League (UFL) witnessed a blockbuster trade. The DC Defenders acquired WR Braylon Sanders from the Houston Gamblers, in return for OL Gottlieb Ayedze.

Shannon Harris always gets what he wants. After trading for TE Briley Moore earlier this year, he has now re-acquired WR Braylon Sanders – who was a key piece for DC in their Championship run in 2025. Sanders was selected by the Houston Gamblers in the draft, and was a strong performer in camp based on what we’ve seen so far. Now, DC brings him back to The District.
Sanders had a tremendous campaign in the UFL this past season. Despite not being utilized much early on, he burst onto the scene after Ty Scott went down with an injury – proving to be a go to target for Jordan Ta’amu. During the regular season, Sanders racked up 332 yards and three touchdowns; averaging a ridiculous 25.5 yards per reception.
Braylon went on to sign with the Washington Commanders, spending the NFL preseason in a familiar place. After spending most of camp in Houston, he now returns to DC. It’s an interesting move for the Defenders, given the raw talent they have in their receiver core already. Sanders joins a room that already features Cornell Powell, Ty Scott, Erik Ezukanma, Montrell Washington, and Keke Coutee – just to name a few.

Meanwhile, the Houston Gamblers picked up Gottlieb Ayedze, a versatile offensive lineman who has the potential to be a starter for this unit. Ayedze was originally drafted by DC in 2024, but spent over a year in the NFL – just now making his way to the United Football League.
Houston was thin at guard, having seen Gareth Warren retire, opting out of the UFL. They’ve got a few pieces – but neither Dohnovan West, Victor Curne, or Dominic Boyd have much experience at any pro level. Gottlieb is a piece who will fit in seamlessly. With his strong collegiate background, too, one would imagine he ends up as a starter in this unit.
Not to mention – Kevin Sumlin is familiar with Ayedze’s game. Gottlieb was in Maryland in 2023, starting in 10 games while Sumlin was an assistant on Mike Locksley’s staff.
Generally speaking, this trade makes sense for Houston – even though they had to give up a very valuable piece. Houston’s wide receiver room is deep. They’ll miss Braylon, but it should not ultimately tank their production from that group. On the other hand, DC now retains one of their key playmakers from 2025, someone who has true chemistry with Jordan Ta’amu and that potent offense.
