DC Defenders Sign WR Vyncint Smith, Waive Preston Williams

It’s almost a daily occurrence at this point for the DC Defenders to see WR movement. The team has signed Vyncint Smith, and surprisingly released Preston Williams.

Vyncint Smith is a huge add for this wide receiver room. Smith has a plethora of NFL experience, having been in the league since 2018.

In college, Smith was a star at Limestone, totaling 2,371 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns across four seasons there. During his senior campaign, he caught 49 passes for 849 yards, earning 2017 Second-Team All-South Atlantic Conference honors.

From there, Smith was picked up by the Houston Texans. He caught five passes for 91 yards and a touchdown his rookie season in Houston. In 2018, Vyncint moved to the New York Jets, totaling 225 receiving yards – but ended up finishing the year back on the Texans roster.

Since then, Smith has been on and off the Jets practice squad, while also spending some time in Tampa Bay – and most recently, Indianapolis.

Now, he’ll look to compete for a roster spot with just several days left before the big cutdowns begin, on March 10th. The DC Defenders have their work cut out for them, as they feature some of the top talent in the UFL across the board.

Preston Williams Released

Preston Williams has been waived by DC. Williams had signed a Letter Of Intent with DC last fall, coming off a few years of playing time in the NFL. Many thought that Preston would be a lock for the regular season roster given his professional background.

Williams caught 56 passes for 767 yards and seven touchdowns with the Miami Dolphins, and seemingly was one of the top receivers coming into camp not just for the DC Defenders, but the league as a whole.

Clearly, these decisions are not easy to make for Head Coach Reggie Barlow, and General Manager Von Hutchins. The team has to cut down from 75 to 58 on March 10th, which means that plenty of quality athletes will be sent home.

In other news, the DC Defenders placed safety Sam Kidd on the injured reserve list. Kidd was an offseason signing for DC out of James Madison, tallying 112 tackles, one interception, and 11 PBU’s during his career there.
