DC Defenders Sign WR Keke Coutee In UFL Free Agency

UFL training camp is well under way with players set to hit the field this week, but teams are certainly not finished adding to their rosters. The DC Defenders made that obvious when the UFL announced several signings on Sunday, including DC adding former Texas Tech and Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee.

Coutee, who notably played with Houston from 2018-2020, played five years in the NFL and finished with 85 receptions for 966 yards, and four touchdowns. Coutee also has valuable experience on special teams, including as a punt and kick returner during his NFL career.

Coutee most recently spent time on the New Orleans Saints training camp roster and Miami Dolphins practice squad in 2023. The speedy 5-foot-9 wideout also worked out for his former team, the Indianapolis Colts, late last season.

DC’s WR room has high expectations entering the season, considering former Defenders wideouts Lucky Jackson and Chris Blair set the XFL on fire last season with their performances. Ultimately earning them both a roster spot in the NFL. GM Von Hutchins has clearly made it a priority this offseason to bring in top talent to replace Jackson and Blair in 2024.

The only returning receivers for DC this season are Brandon Smith and Jazz Ferguson. Smith saw more snaps on offense last season, but both contributed mightily on special teams which should help their case.

Final Thoughts

With the recent news of Josh Hammond retiring from football, this addition comes at no better time for DC. Coutee, who primarily played slot throughout his career, should expect to compete for the now vacant starting slot position. Chris Rowland and CJ Johnson are expected to compete for the inside receiver position as well.

The Defenders also recently added WR John Hightower, who signed prior to Hammond’s retirement. With Coutee signing, DC now has ten wide receivers on the roster entering camp:

Brandon Smith
Jazz Ferguson
Chris Rowland
CJ Johnson
Ty Scott
Trea Shropshire
Preston Williams
Kelvin Harmon
John Hightower
Keke Coutee
