DC Defenders Sign RB ZaQuandre White In UFL Free Agency

Less than a week ago, DC Defenders RB Abram Smith suffered a torn ACL in practice, ending his 2024 UFL season. Fast forward to now, the Defenders have signed former Stallions running back, ZaQuandre White.

White attended South Carolina University for the majority of his college career, totaling 642 rushing yards (6.2 YPC) and 198 receiving yards (9.4 YPR) in his time at USC. Before South Carolina, White went to Florida State, where he played linebacker prior to transitioning to running back.

White went undrafted following the 2022 NFL Draft, and was later signed by the Miami Dolphins and added to their practice squad. His time with Miami was brief, as he was later released.

ZaQuandre White was picked up by the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions in 2023, joining a loaded running back room there. He saw action in five games, compiling 129 rushing yards and two scores. Additionally, he made an impact coming out of the backfield, with 81 receiving yards and a touchdown.

For White, while he showcased some impressive skill sets with the Stallions, the team features a few tremendous backs as is. This led to ZaQuandre going unprotected during the dispersal draft process.

After being on the free agent market for the past couple of months, White now has an opportunity to fill a much needed hole with the DC Defenders. He’s a physical back who is also quite elusive, and should find a way to get himself into the rotation in Fred Kaiss’ offense. Most recently, ZaQuandre had a couple of NFL workouts this summer following the USFL season.

Final Thoughts

We all knew that General Manager Von Hutchins was going to make a move. Abram Smith is a massive loss, and one that certainly isn’t easily replaced. To be quite honest, White isn’t necessarily a “replacement”, per se, in this scenario – but he’s a solid depth piece that has starting potential if his name is called upon.

The DC Defenders will have to finalize their 50 man roster on Saturday, March 23rd.

  1. Very good and much needed signing for the Defenders. Based on what I have seen from White, he should get the lion’s share of the carries. He is behind the rest of the team however who already know the system. Behind a good line in Birmingham he did well. From what I have heard the Defenders also have a good line, so it should be real interesting to see how it plays out.
