DC Defenders Sign OT Jarrid Williams, Release Jean Delance

The DC Defenders are making changes to their offensive line following the week one loss at San Antonio. The Defenders waived OT Jean Delance just two days after his dreadful game against the Brahmas, where he was charged with four penalties, two of which were on DC touchdown plays, erasing two major scores. To make matters worse, Delance was ejected from the game in the third quarter for “spitting” on a Brahmas player.

Subsequently, the Defenders are now signing OT Jarrid Williams to the roster. Williams enters the fold with a fair amount of NFL camp experience, spending time with the Eagles, Steelers, Lions, and Vikings for varying periods of time.

Prior to the NFL, Williams played college ball at Houston University with former Defenders QB D’Eriq King. Williams spent four years at Houston, where he started 17 games before transferring to the University of Miami for his final year of eligibility.

Most recently, Williams was with the San Antonio Brahmas during UFL training camp, but was released during final cuts a few weeks ago.

Jarrid Williams will presumably compete with Tommy Champion and Jamir Ross-Johnson for the starting tackle spot opposite of D’Marcus Hayes. The Defenders offensive line is in need of help after a poor performance against San Antonio, where they were rated 39.8 by PFF as an overall pass-blocking unit.

Final Thoughts

Everyone knew changes had to be made after the week one performance by Jean Delance. While the release may seem rash to plenty, certain organizations hold certain standards and it is obvious GM Von Hutchins and HC Reggie Barlow will not allow the type of actions Delance displayed.

Moving forward, the Defenders will have a few days to get Williams accustomed to the playbook and team before playing Houston on Sunday. Williams will start on the Defenders Inactive List, but is not expected to remain on the list for long.
