As the DC Defenders enter playoff weekend, Shannon Harris is beginning the week with some fireworks. OL Gunner Briton and DE Andre Mintze have re-signed with the team, boosting depth and playmaking abilities heading into the postseason.
Gunner Britton played with the DC Defenders last year, primarily at tackle. With Yasir Durant being placed on IR, this is a key addition for DC – as Britton is already very familiar with Brian Braswell and Fred Kaiss’ system.
Interestingly enough, Britton was drafted by the Louisville Kings during the UFL’s re-draft. He opted out of the year, retiring from the game of football. Now, with DC needing depth on their O-Line, he’s been convinced to “come out of retirement” to play a week (or two) with the Defenders in the playoffs. Gunner had a short stint with the Detroit Lions last preseason, as well.
What’s a little wild is the re-signing of DE Andre Mintze. DC is already one of the top teams in the UFL when it comes to getting after the quarterback. Mintze retired ahead of Training Camp, as the Defenders had originally protected him as one of their 12 roster retentions.
Andre chose his career over football – but, we’re told he is in a unique situation to return. Mintze is using his paid time off from his current profession, to help boost the Defenders’ defensive unit for the postseason push.
During the 2025 UFL season, Andre racked up 21 tackles, six sacks, a ridiculous 38 quarterback pressures, and 16 defensive stops, via PFF. Mintze posted an impressive 79.8 pass rush grade as well.
The DC Defenders are going to need every ounce of energy that Andre Mintze can give them. They have to face off against the Orlando Storm for a third week in a row on Sunday – losing the first two matches. At the end of the day, though, this upcoming affair is truly the only one that really matters.
