DC Defenders Sign LB Mikel Jones, Place Gaillard On IR

This past Sunday, the DC Defenders dealt with a heap of injuries across the board. Perhaps the most major being starting left guard Lamont Gaillard, who has been placed on the injured reserve list following his injury against Memphis. Early speculation indicates a potential bone break, but still nothing official from the league or team regarding the specific injury.

With the open roster spot, the Defenders signed linebacker Mikel Jones from Syracuse University. Jones was a 2023 NFL Draft prospect, but went undrafted and was later picked up by the Los Angeles Chargers. After a stint with LA, Jones was released and later landed with the Dallas Cowboys where he remained for a few weeks.

Mikel’s career at Syracuse was ultra-productive, receiving high praise since entering the program in 2019 as a true freshman and starting four games for the Orange. The following season Jones more than doubled his starts from freshman year with eleven, recording 69 tackles and four interceptions.

Mikel Jones truly broke out in 2021 for Syracuse, earning a first-team All-ACC selection. Jones led the ACC with 110 total tackles, while also recording four sacks. Jones was often referred to as the quarterback of the defense by his head coach and for good reason. Jones finished his Syracuse career in 2022 as one of the nation’s top 15 linebackers for the Butkus Award, but surprisingly fell undrafted in 2023.

With just one game remaining for DC this season, we will have to wait and see if Jones is quickly acclimated and a part of the active roster on gameday.
