UFL Week Four: Jared Shuster's Best Bets | D.J. Swearinger

DC Defenders Re-Sign DB Kentrell Brice, Cut D.J. Swearinger

The DC Defenders are releasing safety D.J. Swearinger from the team, just over a year after signing the former NFL veteran. Swearinger broke the news on his Instagram on Wednesday evening, mentioning in his video that the team wanted to go in a younger direction at the safety position.

Following Swearinger’s release, the Defenders re-signed defensive back Kentrell Brice to the roster. Brice was with the team during training camp this year, but was cut prior to the regular season. Brice returns in hopes to bring more stability to the backend for DC. The Defenders are coming off a performance against St. Louis where they gave up 45 points, the most they’ve ever given up under head coach Reggie Barlow.

Last season, Brice recorded 26 total tackles, an interception, and half a sack in a prominent role for the Defenders defense.

With Brice returning to the team under a very similar regime, it is extremely possible he is active this week. Though, Montae Nicholson is back to full participation at practice and could be a more likely candidate to be active this week against San Antonio.

D.J. Swearinger started in all five games this year, totaling 21 tackles. He struggled in coverage during this past weekend’s 45-12 beating DC took from St. Louis, which could have played a part in his release.

Final Thoughts

Bringing Kentrell Brice back for DC makes a ton of sense. When you turn on the film, there are occasional communication issues in the secondary that have hurt the Defenders in major ways throughout the season. Brice will bring the leadership and communication traits needed for the defense, along with the ability to cover a broader range than Swearinger previously was.

The DC Defenders host the San Antonio Brahmas at Audi Field this Sunday, at 4PM ET on FOX.
