Just a day after his release from the Birmingham Stallions, DT Perrion Winfrey has found a new home. The Columbus Aviators have signed Winfrey, the former All-UFL defensive tackle.
Over the weekend, Winfrey and the Stallions had a bit of a come apart. Tensions were high between Perrion and the coaching staff, which led to his release. In Winfrey’s words, he walked away from the team.
Now, he’s got a new home. Perrion has signed with Columbus, a team that is hoping they can find their rhythm before their playoff aspirations slip away. Winfrey is a tremendous addition, and will immediately make their defense better.
Perrion, who had a tremendous season with the Stallions a year ago, signed with the Dallas Cowboys. He spent the entire season in the NFL, primarily on IR though due to a late injury suffered in camp. Expectations were that Perrion would be brought back for the 2026 campaign, but Dallas released him about a month ago.
With that in mind, it opened up the door for A.J. McCarron to bring Perrion back to Birmingham. Last year, he racked up 32 tackles and a sack, with 19 defensive stops to his name via PFF. Winfrey put up numbers almost every week – and even when he was ‘less productive’ – he was still making plays for teammates taking on double teams.
Perrion’s preseason was quite impressive in Dallas, which earned him a spot on the 53 man roster (prior to injury). Captain Munnerlyn’s defense has been taking steps forward over the last two weeks, and bringing in Winfrey should result in even greater success in the trenches.
