It’s been a difficult season for the Birmingham Stallions with their quarterback room. After losing Alex McGough on the first play in week two, Matt Corral went down towards the end of a week four win over the Houston Roughnecks.
While Corral’s original injury report seemed to indicate that he would only miss a week or two, we received word last week that the injury was more serious. This turned out to be the case, as Matt was placed on IR over the weekend.
Losing Corral is a brutal blow to the offense in Birmingham. Matt has had his ups and downs – but was showing some serious growth and promise in that week four win against Houston. He’s led the Stallions to multiple wins over the last year, and had the team positioned to make a run in the USFL Conference once again.
With Matt down, though, the Stallions will have to find life elsewhere. They re-signed J’Mar Smith once again, who originally was supposed to be with the team for just one week. Smith, the veteran with Skip Holtz, will provide the team with a comfortable fallback depending on how things shake out with their other two signal callers.
As of right now, Case Cookus and Andrew Peasley are splitting reps for the Stallions.
We witnessed in the game yesterday the talent that Andrew Peasley has, as he flashed his skillsets making things happen through the air, and on the ground. Cookus was relatively productive as well, and with San Antonio’s difficulties getting into the end zone, Birmingham ended up trouncing the Brahmas at home.
However, the concerning part is that both Cookus and Peasley got banged up in yesterday’s game. We saw Peasley go down hard on his leg a couple of times, and over the broadcast we could hear him mention that his knee felt like it kept hyperextending. This knocked him out of the game in the second half, and Cookus finished it out.
Case was having problems as well, though. We also overheard him on the broadcast complaining about his knee pain, and how it was nearly impossible to put any pressure on it. It’s impressive that he was able to finish the game as smoothly as he did.
Cookus and Peasley finished yesterday’s game with the following stat-lines:
Case Cookus: 16/23, 166 yards, 2 TD | 16 rushing yards
Andrew Peasley: 5/8, 79 yards | 10 rushing yards
For the Birmingham Stallions, they are one injury away from seeing their fifth quarterback of the season utilized. If Peasley’s injury ends up being more serious, there is a chance we could see J’Mar Smith take the field for legitimate action in week seven.
The Stallions have been far from perfect offensively. They’ve been inconsistent in every aspect of offensive play. That said, it’s been a very trying situation for Skip Holtz, Lester Erb, and this offensive staff to work through. They’ve won four games this season – despite four different quarterbacks seeing action. If they can finally get some consistency on that end, without the carousel continuing, the Stallions will get back on track.
With all of that in mind, Alex McGough isn’t too far away from returning. From what we’re told, the former USFL MVP could be healthy enough by week eight to return – but time will tell.
