Birmingham Stallions Sign Matt Corral and DeMarquis Gates

Birmingham Stallions Sign QB Matt Corral & LB DeMarquis Gates

The rich get richer. Yesterday, the Birmingham Stallions made a huge splash across the UFL when they announced the signing of two former Ole Miss stars: quarterback Matt Corral and linebacker DeMarquis Gates.

Matt Corral

Corral is a familiar name to football fans. The quarterback was dominant at Ole Miss in Lane Kiffin’s offense. He threw for 8,287 yards and 57 touchdowns while adding 1,338 and 18 touchdowns on the ground. His last year at Ole Miss he racked up a laundry list of accolades, including being named an All-American and All-SEC selection, the Conerly Trophy winner, and being a finalist or semifinalist for a host of awards including finishing seventh in Heisman voting.

Matt Corral was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers. Things did not go according to plan there. He missed the entire 2022 season due to injury. He was then cut by the Panthers in 2023 a day after making the initial 53-man roster.

The next day he was picked up by the New England Patriots and was expected to be their backup quarterback for the season. However, he disappeared for a couple of days in September and was released by the team shortly after.

Corral will now look for a fresh start in the UFL with Birmingham. He enters as the most highly touted QB prospect in the UFL and has the potential to become the face of not only the Birmingham Stallions but the entire league. He will not be without competition, though, as the Stallions bring back former starting quarterback J’Mar Smith and backup Jalen Morton as well as a new addition in Adrian Martinez.

DeMarquis Gates

Stallions’ fans were thrilled to learn that linebacker DeMarquis Gates will be back in 2024. Gates was a star for the Stallions in 2022, earning All-USFL honors as a linebacker. That season, Gates led the Stallions in tackles (76), tackles for loss (12), and sacks (7); tied for the most forced fumbles (2), fumbles recovered (1), and defensive touchdowns (1); tied for the second most interceptions (1); and adding six pass deflections—and all that despite missing one game due to injury.

After such a dominant season, DeMarquis Gates ended up signing with the Chicago Bears. He spent most of the 2022 and 2023 NFL seasons on their practice squad, but he did spend time on the active roster each year as well. He was released by Chicago in January.

Gates, arguably the best player on the Birmingham Stallions 2022 championship team, now returns to Birmingham and reunites with fellow linebacker Scooby Wright to help lead the defense.

More to Come?

Zach Potter hinted that the roster, even though it currently sits at 75 players, is not done yet.

It will be interesting to see who else they bring in (and release) with camp coming up very soon.
