Another day, another big scoop for the Birmingham Stallions. On Thursday, the Stallions added QB Michael Hiers and DT Isaiah Coe to the roster, bringing depth and talent to a roster that continues to stack.
QB Michael Hiers
At long last, Michael Hiers is a Birmingham Stallion. It’s something that has been in the works for years, with many in the area trying to will it into existence, per se, due to Hiers’ ties to the area.
Michael was born in Birmingham, attending Briarwood Christian School locally. Once he got to college, he began his career at Murray State, before transferring to Northwest Mississippi Community College. He was named MACCC most valuable player in 2020.
Michael then made his way to the Samford Bulldogs, earning Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2022. He was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, throwing for 3,290 yards and 35 touchdowns as he led Samford to the FCS playoffs. The Bulldogs went 6-5 the next year, with Hiers throwing for over 3,000 yards again.
Hiers has had a couple of pro opportunities, notably with the Buccaneers (rookie mini-camp), and the CFL’s Roughriders. With Jaren Hall no longer in the picture for the Stallions, Hiers fills in as a local prospect who can sling the football.
DT Isaiah Coe
Coe is back in the UFL, after a stint this past training camp with the St. Louis Battlehawks. St. Louis had drafted Isaiah in the 2024 UFL Draft, but released him during camp cutdowns.
Coe began his college career at Iowa Western CC, posting 37 tackles and 6.5 sacks during the 2019 season. In 2021, Coe made the move to Oklahoma. Across three seasons, he totaled 55 tackles and three sacks. In his final year with the Sooners, Isaiah started in seven of 13 games played; with 26 tackles, 2.5 TFL’s, and three quarterback hurries.
Isaiah Coe was invited to mini-camp with the Indianapolis Colts, but remained unsigned. Recently, Coe attended “The Pro Showcase”, where he was unanimously viewed as the top DT in attendance. Now, he gets another chance professionally, this time with the Stallions.
Final Thoughts
Birmingham released DT Omari Thomas, the former Volunteer. Thomas spent a bit of time with the New Orleans Saints. He totaled 115 tackles and five sacks in college.
It’s tremendous to see Michael Hiers finally land on a UFL squad. He attended the UFL Showcases last year, and has shown interest in playing for Birmingham for quite some time. He enters the QB room behind Matt Corral and Taylor Elgersma, but don’t count out the Birmingham kid quite yet. He’s a special kind of talent, and an even better person.
